Moscow Criticizes British Diplomacy
In an interview with a news agency published on Sunday, Kelin highlighted what he sees as a troubling pattern in British foreign policy behavior.
Last Tuesday, Downing Street revealed its intention to implement a second significant round of sanctions against Russia within the same month.
Alongside these punitive measures, the UK reiterated its insistence on Moscow's acceptance of a “full and unconditional ceasefire” in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
This demand echoes similar ultimatums issued by France and Germany, who had also warned of additional penalties in the run-up to peace negotiations between Moscow and Kiev held in Istanbul the previous week.
Kelin remarked, “I must say that over the past three years, I have heard many ultimatums here, especially in the Foreign Office. It seems that London has forgotten how to speak differently.”
He also noted that envoys from other countries based in the British capital have voiced unease over “the tone that British diplomacy has adopted,” suggesting a broader discomfort with the UK’s confrontational communication style.
In his critique of UK leadership, Kelin argued that current Prime Minister Keir Starmer is equally as “warlike” as his forerunners.
According to the ambassador, Starmer, along with former prime ministers Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak, have all shown a consistent level of “belligerence and irresponsibility in assessing the international situation and the consequences of their actions.”
He stressed that despite the change in leadership, Britain has pursued an unchanging “anti-Russian course and senseless, reckless support for Ukraine,” indicating a steadfast but, in his view, misguided foreign policy stance.
