Lebanon Initiates Joint Committees to Disarm Palestinian Refugee Camps
"We have formed Lebanese-Palestinian committees, and work will begin mid-June in three Palestinian camps to address the issue of Palestinian arms," Aoun stated during a Beirut meeting with a U.S. delegation led by Senator Angus King.
The president refrained from revealing additional details or identifying the specific camps targeted for this initiative.
This development comes after last week’s agreement between Aoun and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to set up a joint committee responsible for overseeing Palestinian camps in Lebanon. Both leaders emphasized Lebanon’s sole authority over weapons within its borders.
Ramzi Damaschkieh, who leads the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee, confirmed on Friday that a disarmament timeline for Palestinian camps has been established.
Lebanon hosts approximately 200,000 Palestinian refugees across 12 camps, most controlled by Palestinian factions.
