Lufthansa Group Prolongs Tel Aviv Flight Halt
The suspension impacts a broad range of carriers under the Lufthansa umbrella, including Germany’s flagship Lufthansa airline, Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings, ITA Airways, Brussels Airlines, and the logistics arm Lufthansa Cargo.
Originally, the airlines had scheduled to restart operations to Tel Aviv by June 9. However, escalating missile strikes launched by the Yemen-based Houthi militants, targeting airports in Israel, compelled the group to push back the resumption by an additional week to ensure passenger and crew safety.
The Houthis have significantly ramped up their missile campaigns since Israel resumed its military operations in Gaza, intensifying the volatile situation. Beyond airspace threats, since November 2023, the group has also carried out attacks on commercial shipping vessels navigating the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea. These moves are aimed at supporting Palestinians amid the brutal Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the deaths of over 53,900 people.
The continuation of these aggressive actions underscores the complex and dangerous security environment, forcing major airlines like Lufthansa Group to take decisive operational measures to protect travelers.
