White House presentative declares Putin-Trump meeting ‘imminent’

(MENAFN) A high-level meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected soon, according to Trump’s deputy assistant, Sebastian Gorka. Speaking at a security summit hosted by Politico, Gorka said the meeting is “imminent” and aimed at facilitating a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. He declined to provide a specific timeline or further details.

Trump is currently touring the Middle East and has suggested he might travel to Türkiye on Friday if developments warrant it. This coincides with anticipated talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul, following Putin’s recent proposal to revive peace negotiations that collapsed three years ago.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky initially insisted that Putin attend the talks in person and committed to going to Türkiye himself. However, the Kremlin clarified that Putin has no plans to travel, and Trump noted that Putin’s attendance was unnecessary since he, too, had not confirmed his presence.

Russia has reiterated that its goals for the Istanbul talks remain consistent with its 2022 position, emphasizing the need to resolve foundational issues like Ukraine’s pursuit of NATO membership. Zelensky has since agreed to send a delegation, led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, to the discussions now expected to begin Friday, according to TASS.

Since returning to office in January, President Trump has been actively pressuring both Moscow and Kiev to engage in direct dialogue, expressing dissatisfaction with the slow progress toward peace.
