Trump consents postponing EU tariffs

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump has announced a postponement of the planned 50% tariff on European Union goods, extending the deadline from June 1 to July 9, 2025. The decision came after a phone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who requested more time to continue trade negotiations.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump said it was his “privilege” to grant the extension. He reiterated his dissatisfaction with the current U.S.-EU trade relationship, describing the EU as “very difficult to deal with” and again criticizing the trade deficit as “totally unacceptable.”

Von der Leyen, in a statement on X, described her discussion with Trump as “good,” and emphasized that the EU is prepared to move quickly and decisively in talks to finalize a trade deal.

In April, the Trump administration introduced a 20% tariff on EU imports, along with a 25% levy on cars and metals. However, the 20% rate was later paused for 90 days, keeping only a 10% baseline in place. Without a deal, tariffs are set to rise to 50% on July 9.

So far, the only new trade agreement under the current policy has been with the United Kingdom. The EU criticized the UK deal, which preserved a 10% base tariff on British goods but reduced higher tariffs on steel and autos. EU trade officials have since warned that they may take retaliatory steps unless more favorable terms are negotiated.

Trump has repeatedly accused the EU of unfair trade practices, citing restrictive regulations, VAT policies, penalties on corporations, and lawsuits against American firms as contributors to the ongoing trade imbalance.
