Nasser’s grandson cautions of US-headed neocolonialism
Gamal Abdel Nasser Jr., the grandson of Egypt’s revolutionary leader and former president, has criticized the United States for becoming a leading force in modern neocolonialism. Speaking in an exclusive interview with RT ahead of International Africa Day, Nasser Jr. warned that Western powers now use indirect methods—such as global institutions, economic sanctions, and ideological influence—to maintain control over other nations.
He described this new form of dominance as subtle but far-reaching, cloaked in narratives of “progress,” “human rights,” and “globalization,” while serving Western geopolitical and economic interests. He emphasized the importance of reviving the spirit of anti-colonial resistance to counter these modern pressures.
Nasser Jr. pointed to his grandfather’s 1956 nationalization of the Suez Canal as a historic moment of reclaiming national dignity and rejecting foreign domination. “He broke the psychological hold that convinced people they couldn’t control their own destiny,” he said.
Today, that control has returned in new ways, according to Nasser Jr., who cited media, education, and global institutions as tools used to impose foreign values and suppress local identities. He argued that the United States, once a colony itself, now acts as a modern imperial force, particularly in the Middle East and Africa.
He accused Washington of using humanitarian rhetoric to justify interventions that are actually motivated by the desire to control natural resources, citing U.S. involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, and Gaza. He also criticized recent U.S. proposals, such as President Donald Trump’s suggestion to transform Gaza into a tourist hub under American control, as examples of neocolonial ambitions.
Calling this behavior a “new Western tyranny,” Nasser Jr. predicted it will eventually collapse. “A new generation is awakening—proud of its heritage and ready to reject imposed narratives,” he said. “Just as colonialism was defeated, so too will this mental and cultural monopoly fall. True freedom starts with the courage to say no.”
