Erdogan, Syrian Leader Hold Talks to Enhance Bilateral Ties
The meeting, held behind closed doors, spanned 90 minutes, the office confirmed in an official statement.
This visit marked al-Sharaa’s first trip to Türkiye since the United States and the European Union moved to lift sanctions on Syria earlier this month, the statement added.
During the talks, Erdogan welcomed the initial phase of sanctions relief, highlighting Ankara’s approval of the move. He reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and stressed that a unified political and military leadership is vital for lasting peace in the country.
Al-Sharaa expressed appreciation for Erdogan’s role in advocating for the sanctions to be lifted, acknowledging the Turkish president’s continued support.
Erdogan also indicated that ties between Türkiye and Syria are poised to deepen, with expanding collaboration expected across key sectors including energy, defense, and transportation.
Addressing regional tensions, Erdogan condemned Israel’s military actions on Syrian soil, declaring them unacceptable, and reiterated that Türkiye remains firmly opposed to such hostilities.
