Japan Passes Law Forcing Companies into Carbon Emissions Trading

(MENAFN) Japan’s parliament passed a new law on Wednesday requiring hundreds of companies to participate in a carbon emissions trading program beginning in April 2026, a news agency reported.

The updated legislation targets firms emitting 100,000 tons or more of carbon dioxide annually, mandating their enrollment in the Green Transformation-Emissions Trading System.

Authorities estimate that businesses contribute nearly 60% of the nation’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

The law is expected to compel roughly 300 to 400 large corporations to take part in this emissions reduction initiative.

Under the scheme, companies will receive a capped emission quota, and those exceeding their limits will need to purchase carbon credits on the open market.

Conversely, firms that lower emissions and generate surplus credits can sell them, incentivizing further environmental improvements.
