U.S. Senator Warns Putin

(MENAFN) Senator Lindsey Graham, a staunch supporter of U.S. Leader Donald Trump, issued a firm warning to Russian Leader Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, declaring that there is “a new sheriff in town.”

This statement came via a post on the social media platform X, where Graham criticized Moscow's consistent strategy, saying, “Same ol’, same ol’ from Putin’s Russia. Escalate to de-escalate. Drag it out, hoping others lose interest. There’s a new sheriff in town. The old playbook won’t work this time.”

His comments suggest a shift in how the United States might approach Russia moving forward.

The senator's statement followed Trump’s recent intensification of his rhetoric toward Putin. On Sunday night, Trump referred to the Russian leader as “absolutely crazy” in a social media message and cautioned that any full-scale attempt to overtake Ukraine “will lead to the downfall of Russia.”

Trump’s bold language appears to signal growing disapproval of Putin’s actions amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In response, the Kremlin attributed Trump’s reaction to being overwhelmed emotionally.

It also pointed to the initiation of dialogue between Russia and Ukraine as a “very important achievement,” emphasizing that the United States has played a significant role in pushing these discussions forward, saying the country has made “great efforts” in this direction.

In another statement on X, Graham expressed gratitude for Trump’s contributions to efforts aimed at halting “this terrible war.”

However, he acknowledged a key obstacle to peace, stating, “But to end any war, you must have willing partners. As of yet, Putin is not willing.”

This underscores the continuing challenges in bringing the conflict to a resolution.

Adding to the pressure on Moscow, Graham, alongside Senator Richard Blumenthal, unveiled a legislative proposal on April 1 titled the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025.

This measure seeks to impose a massive 500 percent tariff on imported goods from nations that continue to purchase Russian oil, gas, uranium, and similar exports.

The bill is intended to deter economic cooperation with Russia and tighten international sanctions against the Kremlin.
