N-Korea states Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ initiation will spark nuclear weapons race
North Korea has condemned US President Donald Trump’s newly announced “Golden Dome” missile defense initiative, warning that it will accelerate a global nuclear arms race. The system, revealed last week, aims to establish a layered defense network capable of intercepting long-range missile threats. It includes space-based interceptors and the ability to target missile launch sites preemptively. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the cost could exceed $542 billion over two decades.
In a statement issued by the North Korean Foreign Ministry’s Institute for American Studies and reported by state media on Tuesday, Pyongyang labeled the plan as aggressive and destabilizing. The statement criticized the initiative as an offensive weapon under the guise of defense, claiming it will force non-aligned countries to pursue nuclear capabilities for deterrence.
The memorandum also warned that allies of the US, such as South Korea and Japan, risk being pulled into future conflicts as extensions of American military strategy. It described the Golden Dome as an example of the US’s “America First” approach and accused Washington of pursuing unilateral global dominance, including the militarization of outer space.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) called the project “a nuclear war scenario in space” and a manifestation of US arrogance and unilateralism.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the right of sovereign nations to defend themselves but reiterated Russia’s opposition to space militarization and any actions that undermine strategic stability. President Vladimir Putin previously noted that Russia is developing nuclear weapons capable of bypassing US missile defenses and argued that Washington’s long-term investment in missile defense has offered little actual security for Americans.
