Vatican Condemns Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza, Calls for Halt
“What is happening in Gaza is unacceptable. International humanitarian law must always apply, and apply to everyone. We call for an end to the bombardments and for the necessary aid to reach the population,” Parolin told a news outlet.
In his appeal, the cardinal pressed the global community to intensify efforts to stop the unfolding “tragedy” and also urged Hamas to release all hostages currently held.
Addressing broader diplomatic efforts, Parolin was asked whether the Vatican might serve as a venue for renewed peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. He stated, “Pope Leo has offered the Holy See’s full availability to host any negotiations, providing a neutral, protected venue."
“This was not a mediation—because a mediation must be requested by the parties. In this case, there has only been a public offer of hospitality for a possible meeting,” he explained.
The cardinal acknowledged that other potential locations, such as Geneva, were also under consideration. However, he emphasized that initiating dialogue was what “truly” matter.
“First and foremost, a truce is needed to end the devastation, the destroyed cities, the civilians losing their lives. Then it is urgent to reach a stable, just, and lasting peace, one accepted and agreed upon by both sides,” he added.
Cardinal Parolin reaffirmed the Pope’s and the Vatican’s unwavering “commitment” to fostering peace, supporting negotiations, and encouraging meaningful dialogue to resolve both regional and global conflicts.
