Russia Warns US Over Golden Dome Plan
(MENAFN) The United States is adopting a "reckless approach" to global security by pursuing a global anti-ballistic missile defense system, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.
She voiced these concerns in response to the US’s initiative, which is supported by Leader Donald Trump and known as the Golden Dome.
This program aims to create a multi-layered defense framework designed to counter long-range threats, incorporating space-based interceptors and capabilities for preemptive attacks.
The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that the project could cost over USD542 billion over a span of 20 years.
Zakharova cautioned on Tuesday that the proposed system "directly undermines the foundations of strategic stability," a perspective shared by China.
In a regular press briefing responding to a Chinese media question, she highlighted that both nations had outlined their mutual concerns in a joint statement issued earlier this month.
The joint statement, published on May 8, accused Washington of neglecting the long-established connection between offensive and defensive strategic forces, a principle deemed essential for maintaining global stability.
Additionally, Moscow and Beijing expressed their opposition to the US’s labeling of space as a “warfighting domain,” along with the military expansion this would necessitate under the Golden Dome project.
