Ukraine able to attack deep inside Russia with German arms

(MENAFN) Germany will no longer restrict Ukraine from using German-supplied weapons to strike targets deep within Russian territory, Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Monday. Speaking at the EuropaForum, Merz emphasized that Ukraine must be able to defend itself “effectively,” and not be limited to launching strikes only within its own borders.

“There are now no range restrictions on the weapons we supply to Ukraine,” Merz stated, noting that Britain, France, and the U.S. have also removed similar limitations. His remarks suggest a coordinated shift among Western allies toward more aggressive military support for Kiev.

Merz did not clarify whether Germany will now provide Taurus cruise missiles—long-range weapons capable of reaching targets up to 500 kilometers away, including potentially Moscow. The issue had been a major sticking point under former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who opposed delivering the missiles over fears of escalating the conflict with Russia.

Russia has repeatedly warned that such moves would make Germany a direct participant in the war. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called Merz’s announcement “dangerous” and said it undermines ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict through diplomacy.

Merz revealed that Berlin is in active talks with London and Paris regarding further arms deliveries to Ukraine. His statements come as direct peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have resumed for the first time since Kiev exited talks in 2022. However, the German leader expressed doubt about the success of diplomacy, suggesting Russian President Vladimir Putin views peace overtures as signs of weakness.

Meanwhile, Moscow has reiterated its willingness to engage in peace talks aimed at finding a long-term resolution, rather than a short-lived ceasefire. Previous negotiations in Istanbul collapsed when Ukraine withdrew unilaterally, though Russia has since signaled readiness to resume without preconditions.
