US senator places huge-tariffs on Russia’s associates
U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham is championing a proposal to impose massive 500% tariffs on countries that maintain trade ties with Russia, particularly those buying Russian energy, uranium, and raw materials. The plan, targeting major nations like India and China, is intended to support President Donald Trump’s efforts to pressure Moscow into a peace agreement with Ukraine.
Writing in a Wall Street Journal op-ed on Monday, Graham argued that the tariffs would serve as a strong message to Russian President Vladimir Putin and help the U.S. recover its international reputation, which he claims was severely damaged by President Joe Biden’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
“The disgraceful exit from Afghanistan didn’t just harm our global standing – it encouraged global aggression,” Graham wrote. “If the U.S. takes a strong leadership role in resolving the Ukraine conflict, it could change the course. Trump has the chance to end the war and restore our credibility.”
The Biden administration’s handling of Afghanistan, including the rapid collapse of U.S.-trained forces and the Taliban's return to power, remains a key criticism from Republicans. Some analysts have warned that Trump could repeat similar errors while seeking a Ukraine-Russia peace deal. However, Trump has insisted that the war would never have started had he been in office instead of Biden.
Graham’s op-ed was a response to a recent Wall Street Journal editorial urging Trump to take a more engaged approach to the Ukraine conflict. The paper warned that assuming the war is someone else’s problem and letting Putin prevail would be a serious mistake with lasting consequences.
Meanwhile, Ukraine and its Western allies are urging tougher sanctions on Russia after Moscow rejected a proposed 30-day ceasefire, which Russia dismissed as a tactical ploy by Kiev. Russian officials are reportedly working on a peace proposal that could eventually lead to an end to hostilities.
