Police states Liverpool car incident not being treated as terrorism
(MENAFN) Merseyside Police have stated that the car incident during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade, which left at least 47 people injured, is not being treated as an act of terrorism.
The incident occurred on Water Street in downtown Liverpool, where a vehicle drove into a crowd of fans celebrating the football club’s title win. Authorities confirmed that the driver, a 53-year-old white British man from the local area, has been taken into custody.
Speaking at a press conference, Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims urged the public not to speculate or spread misinformation online. “This appears to be an isolated incident, and we are not seeking any additional suspects,” she said.
Emergency services reported that 20 people received treatment at the scene, while 27 others were taken to the hospital. Among the injured are four children, and two individuals are reported to be in serious condition.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the swift response by emergency personnel and emphasized the right of fans, especially children, to celebrate without fear. “Liverpool stands united, and the entire nation stands with the city,” he said.
