Kremlin responds to West removing limits on long-range arms for Ukraine

(MENAFN) The Kremlin has voiced strong concerns over reports that Ukraine’s Western allies have lifted restrictions on the use of long-range weapons, calling the move a threat to peace efforts. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that such decisions directly contradict Russia’s ongoing attempts to reach a political resolution to the conflict.

Peskov was responding to recent remarks by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who stated that Ukraine is no longer limited in how it uses Western-supplied weapons against Russian targets. Merz noted that the UK, France, Germany, and the US have all removed range limitations on their military aid.

“If these decisions have truly been made, they seriously undermine the peace process,” Peskov said, labeling them “quite dangerous.”

Russia has previously cautioned the West against enabling Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russian territory, particularly through the use of NATO satellite targeting data. Moscow sees such support as direct involvement in the conflict.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently approved updates to the country’s nuclear doctrine. The revised policy broadens the scenarios in which a strategic response, potentially including nuclear weapons, could be justified—particularly if a non-nuclear nation attacks with backing from a nuclear power. Nonetheless, the doctrine maintains that nuclear force remains a last resort.

Ukrainian forces have already carried out several long-range attacks inside Russia using weapons supplied by the West. Moscow continues to argue that such military aid fuels the war and hampers diplomatic progress.

Despite the escalation, peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine resumed earlier this month for the first time since 2022. Both sides agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners and develop detailed ceasefire proposals. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently stated that Moscow is finalizing a memorandum that outlines the framework and timeline for a potential peace deal.
