Trump Ukraine envoy criticizes Medvedev’s ‘reckless’ WW3 remark

(MENAFN)
Keith Kellogg, the U.S. presidential envoy for Ukraine, has criticized former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for warning that rising tensions with the U.S. could lead to World War III. Kellogg called the remarks “reckless” and said they were not appropriate for a global power.

Kellogg’s comments, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, came in response to a statement by Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council. Medvedev was reacting to U.S. President Donald Trump’s earlier warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin was “playing with fire” and that without Trump’s efforts, serious consequences might have already hit Russia.

Medvedev responded by emphasizing that the real danger would be a global conflict. “The only truly BAD thing is WWIII. I hope Trump understands this!” he posted.

Kellogg countered by asserting that Trump is actively working to end the war and save lives. He also noted that Washington is waiting on Russia to submit a memorandum outlining its conditions for a ceasefire, as agreed during the recent Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul—the first direct dialogue in three years.

Known for his aggressive rhetoric, Medvedev recently claimed Ukraine is facing its final opportunity to preserve any form of statehood and warned that failed negotiations could lead to a “more terrible stage of war.”

Trump has consistently urged an immediate ceasefire and warned of the risk of global escalation. He has also threatened new sanctions on Russia if negotiations stall and has criticized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, accusing him of dangerously escalating the conflict.

At the Istanbul negotiations, both sides agreed to a large prisoner exchange and committed to presenting detailed ceasefire proposals. Russian President Putin has stated that a full ceasefire would require Ukraine to end mobilization, halt foreign weapons shipments, withdraw from Russian-claimed territories, abandon NATO aspirations, and formally recognize Crimea and four other regions as Russian.
