Graham Warns Putin: “New Sheriff in Town” Amid Trump Criticism
Graham condemned Russia’s ongoing tactics, accusing Putin of sticking to his usual strategy of escalating conflicts to provoke de-escalation and prolong the war in hopes that international attention will wane. "Same ol’, same ol’ from Putin’s Russia. Escalate to de-escalate. Drag it out, hoping others lose interest. There’s a new sheriff in town. The old playbook won’t work this time," Graham posted on X.
His statement followed Trump’s intensifying verbal assault on Putin, who he labeled “absolutely crazy” in a social media post on Sunday night. Trump further warned that any Russian effort to seize all of Ukraine “will lead to the downfall of Russia.”
Responding on Monday, the Kremlin dismissed Trump’s reaction as a result of “emotional overload,” emphasizing that initiating talks between Russia and Ukraine marks a "very important achievement." The Russian government also credited the US with making “great efforts” toward this progress.
In another X post, Graham expressed his gratitude for Trump’s attempts to bring an end to "this terrible war," but stressed that peace requires cooperation from all involved parties. "But to end any war, you must have willing partners. As of yet, Putin is not willing," he noted.
On April 1, Graham, alongside Senator Richard Blumenthal, introduced the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025, a bill designed to levy a 500% tariff on imports from nations that purchase Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other commodities.
Earlier, Graham had signaled that the US Senate stands ready to escalate sanctions if Russia “continues to play games.”
