Hungary proceeds with LGBTQ parade probation vow

(MENAFN) Hungarian authorities have officially denied a permit for an LGBTQ parade in Budapest, citing recently enacted legislation aimed at shielding children from what the government terms “harmful influences.” This marks the first time the law has been used to block such an event.

In a statement issued Monday, Budapest police rejected the request for the upcoming weekend’s pride event, which had backing from five human rights organizations, including Amnesty International Hungary. Authorities referred to a new law prioritizing children’s right to “appropriate physical, mental, and moral development” above other civil liberties.

The legislation, adopted in March, bans pride parades and allows facial recognition technology to identify attendees, who may face fines of up to $500. A related constitutional amendment passed in April defines only two genders—male and female—and recognizes marriage exclusively as a union between a man and a woman.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a vocal opponent of “woke ideologies,” strongly supported the measures, arguing they protect minors from the “international gender network” and ideologies promoted by EU institutions.

In reaction to the ban, 17 EU member states issued a joint statement condemning the Hungarian law, claiming it violates core European values such as human dignity, freedom, and equality. They called on Hungary to amend the legislation.

Meanwhile, EurActiv reported that EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's office advised commissioners not to attend Budapest's larger Pride march scheduled for late June to avoid provoking tensions. The Commission denied the report and reaffirmed von der Leyen’s commitment to a “true Union of Equality.”
