Russia Says Force will not Solve South Sudan War

(MENAFN) The worsening unrest in South Sudan cannot be resolved through armed intervention, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has cautioned.

Hostilities between the government and various opposition groups have intensified, resulting in what she described as a severe humanitarian and political emergency.

Zakharova delivered her remarks during a press briefing on Tuesday held in Makhachkala, located in the Republic of Dagestan.

The session addressed a range of regional and international security topics.

“The sharp deterioration of the situation in South Sudan in recent months is a cause for serious concern,” Zakharova stated, emphasizing that the escalating confrontations have caused a growing number of fatalities, with civilians among the victims.

Since the beginning of the year, violence has worsened across the continent’s newest nation.

Ethnic-based attacks and violations of a fragile peace accord signed in 2018 have undermined hopes for national reconciliation and stability.

On Monday, the International Committee of the Red Cross revealed that its medical personnel have conducted more than 1,000 operations on individuals injured by weapons in under three months.

Additionally, over 130,000 people have reportedly been forced from their homes due to ongoing air raids and jet attacks.

These assaults have obstructed humanitarian efforts and severed essential commercial routes that connect South Sudan with Ethiopia.
