Russia strikes army locations in response for Ukrainian ‘terrorist attacks’
According to the ministry, Ukraine—backed by some European nations—has stepped up its use of Western-supplied drones and missiles in strikes on non-military sites deep inside Russian territory. Over the past week alone, Russian air defenses intercepted more than 2,300 drones, many far from the front lines. The ministry claims that recent Ukrainian strikes have resulted in civilian casualties, including women and children.
In response, Russia has carried out what it calls “high-precision” missile and drone strikes solely against Ukrainian military assets. The targeted facilities reportedly include airfields, ammunition depots, radar installations, military bases, and factories involved in drone production and explosives manufacturing.
The ministry warned that further “massive and group” strikes will continue against Ukrainian military-related infrastructure if attacks on Russian territory persist.
This escalation comes shortly after Russia and Ukraine resumed direct peace talks for the first time since 2022, holding a meeting in Istanbul on May 16. That session led to the largest prisoner swap between the two sides since the conflict intensified. Moscow has stated it is drafting a memorandum outlining conditions for a potential ceasefire and a roadmap for conflict resolution, which it intends to submit to Kiev following the completion of the multi-phase prisoner exchange.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted that the proposed document will include Russia’s core demands for ending the conflict and expressed hope that Ukraine is preparing a reciprocal proposal.
