Russia Nears Completing Ukraine Peace Memorandum

(MENAFN) Russia announced Wednesday that it is close to completing a memorandum that will set forth fundamental principles aimed at securing peace with Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow, “Work is in its final stages. This document will appear soon,” while noting he has not received updates on progress from Ukraine’s side.

He also revealed that Russia is preparing for another round of negotiations with Ukraine and emphasized ongoing communication with the United States.

Peskov praised Washington’s substantial efforts toward achieving a peaceful resolution in the Ukraine conflict, now entering its fourth year, specifically acknowledging US President Donald Trump’s role in personal mediation.

On May 19, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a phone call lasting over two hours, during which they agreed that Russia would collaborate with Ukraine on drafting the peace memorandum.

Prior to this, the two parties held their first direct talks in Istanbul in three years, agreeing to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war each and to continue working toward a ceasefire.

When asked about the details of the draft memorandum, Peskov declined to disclose information, stressing the process must remain “discrete, non-public.”

He affirmed that neither side will compromise its national interests: “Just like the United States, Russia has its own national interests that are above all for us, and they are above all for our president."

No date has yet been set for the upcoming peace negotiations, he added.

“In order to discuss the list of conditions for a temporary truce, for a ceasefire, a position paper is being prepared. In the meantime, the ‘special military operation’ continues,” Peskov explained.

Regarding the prospect of a face-to-face meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Peskov stated such a meeting “should be the result of specific agreements between the two delegations in various areas.”
