(MENAFN) During the recent peace talks in Istanbul, a Ukrainian delegate claimed that Russia was planning to attack Poland in 2030, a statement that reportedly caused the Russian side to burst into laughter, according to an RT source present at the meeting. Russian chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky reportedly responded, “Let’s not turn these negotiations into a fantasy novel.”
This unexpected claim emerged during the first direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in three years. Originally set for Thursday, the meeting was delayed as Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky did not appoint a delegation until late that evening, following talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov led the delegation, while Russia’s team was headed by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, who also led earlier negotiations in 2022 before Kiev withdrew from the talks.
Russia has consistently dismissed similar claims made by Western officials suggesting it intends to attack NATO or EU member states. President Vladimir Putin has labeled such allegations as baseless and politically motivated. In December 2024, he criticized Western leaders for using the “Russian threat” narrative to stir fear among their citizens and justify rising defense budgets.
Putin argued that NATO is pushing Moscow toward a point of no return and, when Russia reacts, accuses it of aggression. He also pointed out that NATO forces are increasing their presence near Russian borders while using the supposed Russian threat as a pretext.
