Istanbul Becomes Main Platform for Russia, Ukraine Talks
Earlier this month, the city hosted the first face-to-face dialogue between the two nations in three years.
Sergey Shoygu, Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, stated during a conversation with Okay Memis, Secretary General of Türkiye’s National Security Council, that “The Istanbul platform is becoming the main platform for conducting negotiations in all areas -- concerning the Black Sea, the Black Sea deal, the grain deal, and now the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations,” according to information from a state-run outlet.
The article further detailed that Shoygu extended his gratitude to Türkiye’s government for offering a venue for direct dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv.
“We know that Ankara has made considerable efforts, including in terms of ensuring security, in order to create optimal conditions for the work of delegations,” Shoygu added, acknowledging Türkiye’s role in facilitating the discussions.
On May 16, Russia and Ukraine convened in Istanbul for their first direct negotiations in three years.
A key result of the meeting was a landmark agreement on a major prisoner swap, involving 1,000 detainees from each nation.
The discussions, organized with Türkiye’s mediation, also led both sides to commit to ongoing dialogue with the aim of reaching a ceasefire.
