Musk resigns from special government worker
DOGE, a Trump-created task force aimed at reducing federal waste and increasing government responsiveness, is not a traditional federal agency. Under Musk’s leadership, DOGE was responsible for eliminating various grants, programs, and federal jobs. The initiative also played a role in dismantling agencies like the Department of Education and USAID.
In a statement posted on his X account, Musk wrote: “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.” He added that the mission of DOGE would continue to grow and evolve throughout the government.
According to the New York Times, special government employees are appointed for temporary duties—no more than 130 days—with or without pay. A White House official confirmed to Reuters that Musk’s departure from the administration would begin immediately.
Musk recently criticized Trump’s latest tax and spending bill, calling it counterproductive to DOGE’s mission and a driver of increased deficits. He also indicated he plans to reduce his political involvement, saying, “I’ve done enough.”
While Trump defended the bill, he admitted that he wasn’t pleased with all of its provisions. According to DOGE, the initiative has saved around $175 billion in taxpayer funds, though its actions have faced pushback from Democrats and legal challenges in court.
