Disastrous floods cause deaths in Nigeria

(MENAFN) Massive flooding in central Nigeria has resulted in the deaths of at least 153 people, with the number expected to rise as rescue operations are still underway, according to recent updates from local emergency officials.

The catastrophe struck the town of Mokwa in Niger State after intense rainfall began late Wednesday and continued through Thursday, triggering widespread destruction. Reports indicate that the disaster left over 3,000 individuals without shelter, with more than 500 families and 265 homes either severely damaged or destroyed. Three entire communities were reportedly wiped out by the floodwaters.

In light of the unfolding humanitarian crisis, emergency agencies convened on Friday to coordinate relief efforts and assess the situation. Authorities have also launched extensive search-and-rescue missions to locate missing persons and provide aid to survivors.

In a directive addressing the crisis, President Bola Tinubu has ordered national emergency services and security forces to intensify their efforts in the disaster-stricken areas. Additionally, he has called on the National Orientation Agency to boost awareness campaigns in vulnerable regions, aiming to better prepare communities for similar natural disasters in the future.
