South Korea Holds Snap Presidential Election
Voting stations began operations at 6 a.m. local time (2100 GMT on Monday) and are scheduled to shut down at 8 p.m. (1100 GMT).
Citizens across the country are actively engaging in the process, casting their votes throughout the day to elect a new head of state.
The individual chosen will serve a single, non-renewable term of five years.
To ensure security and order during the vote, close to 29,000 law enforcement personnel have been positioned nationwide. Ballots are being submitted at approximately 14,295 polling locations.
According to the National Election Commission, as of 5 p.m. local time (0800 GMT), voter participation had climbed to 73.9 percent, which includes those who voted early or from abroad.
The unexpected election was necessitated by the impeachment of former President Yoon on December 14, following his unsuccessful effort to establish "martial law" on December 3.
As mandated, the presidential vote had to be held within two months after the Constitutional Court upheld the National Assembly's decision to remove Yoon in April.
