Trump Approves Increasing Metal Import Tariffs

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, U.S. Leader Donald Trump issued an executive directive that escalates levies on steel and aluminum imports, raising them from the previous rate of 25 percent to a new level of 50 percent, according to a report from a news agency.

The decision is based on concerns over national defense, with the order asserting that the "current volume and conditions" of imported steel and aluminum pose a potential risk to the nation's safety.

Authorities argue that the influx of these materials under current trade conditions undermines the country’s strategic capabilities.

The directive acknowledges that the earlier 25 percent tariff had yielded "some positive effects," but it fell short of sustaining the domestic metal industry’s output at a viable capacity.

As such, the new measure aims to reinforce the sector by increasing trade barriers.

This adjustment will apply to steel, aluminum, and associated goods, and will come into effect at 12:01 a.m. local time (0400GMT) on June 4.

The executive action also clarifies that the United Kingdom, which recently signed a trade pact with the U.S., will not be subject to the elevated rate.

Its shipments will continue under the existing 25 percent tariff, although this exemption is scheduled for review after July 9.
