Brazilian President disapproves of travel sanctions on (STF)
"It's unacceptable for a president of any country to comment on decisions made by another country's Supreme Court," Lula stated at a press conference.
His comments followed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent announcement of new visa restrictions aimed at foreign officials accused of "censoring American citizens or companies."
The restrictions appear to specifically target Moraes, who in 2024 ordered a temporary suspension of the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) due to its non-compliance with Brazilian regulations.
Lula emphasized that he would stand by Moraes and any other STF justice who becomes the subject of sanctions.
Moraes is overseeing a significant legal case against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, focusing on an alleged coup attempt that took place on Jan. 8, 2023.
Bolsonaro’s son, Eduardo Bolsonaro, a federal deputy currently on leave and living in the United States, has lobbied U.S. officials to impose penalties on Moraes.
"It's regrettable that a Brazilian congressman, the son of a former president, is calling for foreign interference in our domestic affairs. That is serious. It's unpatriotic -- a terrorist act," Lula said.
Eduardo Bolsonaro faces an investigation in Brazil for allegedly attempting to obstruct justice and pressuring authorities by seeking external actions against Moraes.
