Trump expresses ‘disappointment’ with Musk
Musk, who leads Tesla, SpaceX, and X, recently stepped down from his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—a Trump-created agency tasked with cutting federal spending. He stated he would refocus on his business ventures, citing concerns that the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” increases national debt and undermines DOGE’s cost-cutting mission.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Trump accused Musk of changing his tune after learning the bill would include cuts to electric vehicle subsidies—something Trump claimed would impact Musk financially. “I’m very disappointed in Elon,” Trump said. “I’ve helped Elon a lot.”
Musk responded with escalating criticism, calling the bill a path to “debt slavery” and urging lawmakers to block it. He rejected Trump’s claim that he was fully briefed on the legislation, saying on X that he was never shown the bill and calling the president’s statement “false.”
In another post, Musk accused Trump of being ungrateful, claiming his support was crucial in securing Trump’s election win and Republican control of Congress. “Without me, Trump would have lost the election,” Musk wrote.
The bill, which passed the House in May and is awaiting Senate approval, aims to extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, slash additional taxes, and boost funding for defense and border security. Critics argue it primarily benefits the wealthy and risks adding $2.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next ten years. It could also leave nearly 11 million more Americans uninsured by 2034, according to a Congressional Budget Office report.
Musk, previously credited with saving $175 billion through federal efficiency measures, warned that the bill’s provisions could reverse much of DOGE’s progress.
