New exchange of Russia, Ukraine bodies is complete

(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine have announced the completion of a fifth round of body repatriations, following arrangements set during face-to-face negotiations held in Istanbul.

According to reports, Russia returned the remains of 1,248 Ukrainian troops, while Ukraine handed over the bodies of 51 Russian servicemen. A statement from the Russian Defense Ministry highlighted that the terms settled earlier this month in Türkiye's largest city were being upheld. It further indicated that a cumulative total of 6,060 bodies had been delivered to Ukraine under the agreement, while 78 Russian bodies had been received in exchange.

“We are ready at this stage to transfer another 2,239 bodies of the deceased servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to the Ukrainian side,” the statement said.

One of the key figures in the negotiations, a presidential aide who headed the Russian team in the Istanbul talks, confirmed the latest swap on Telegram and noted that efforts to exchange prisoners are also in progress.
