Russia, Ukraine Conduct Fifth Body Exchange

(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine jointly confirmed on Monday that a fifth repatriation of fallen soldiers' bodies had been carried out, following the agreements formed during recent in-person negotiations in Istanbul.

According to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry, Moscow transferred the remains of 1,248 Ukrainian troops to Kyiv. In exchange, Ukraine returned 51 bodies of Russian military personnel.

The ministry further stated that Russia had “fulfilled the agreements” concluded in the Turkish city earlier in the month, having now delivered a total of 6,060 bodies to the Ukrainian side. In comparison, 78 Russian bodies have been repatriated by Kyiv so far.

“We are ready at this stage to transfer another 2,239 bodies of the deceased servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to the Ukrainian side,” the statement continued, indicating that the process remains ongoing.

Vladimir Medinsky, aide to the Russian president and head of Russia’s delegation during the Istanbul peace negotiations, also acknowledged the exchange in a post on Telegram.

He noted that the exchange of prisoners is proceeding in parallel, and that “urgent medical transfers of seriously wounded from the front line have been established.”

Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War also confirmed the swap via Telegram.

However, it reported slightly revised figures, stating that 1,245 bodies “which, according to the Russian side, belong to Ukrainian citizens,” had been returned during the latest round.

The Ukrainian statement added, “Thus, Ukraine (has) received (a total of) 6,057 bodies within the framework of the Istanbul agreements,” aligning closely with the Russian data but showing a minor discrepancy.
