Netanyahu rejects ruling out Khamenei killing

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to dismiss the possibility of assassinating Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as tensions between Israel and Iran continue to rise.

The two countries have been exchanging attacks since Israel bombed Iranian nuclear and military sites last Friday, claiming the strikes aimed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Israel has also targeted civilian areas, including the state broadcaster, causing casualties. The US, which was involved in Oman-mediated nuclear talks with Iran before the attacks, has supported Israel’s actions.

In an interview with ABC News, Netanyahu responded to reports that US President Donald Trump rejected an Israeli plan to assassinate Khamenei over fears of escalating the conflict. Netanyahu said such a move would not worsen the situation but rather end the conflict.

He accused Iran of wanting a “forever war” and pushing the world toward nuclear war, stating Israel’s actions are meant to stop this aggression. When pressed on whether he would target Khamenei, Netanyahu avoided specifics but mentioned that Israel has already targeted top Iranian nuclear scientists.

Israel claims to have killed at least ten Iranian nuclear scientists through targeted strikes since last week. Iran has accused Israel of covertly assassinating its nuclear experts for over a decade.

Netanyahu framed Israel’s campaign as a protective measure for the US and the world, warning that attacks could extend beyond the region. He emphasized the need for US support to completely dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

Reports suggest Israel has asked the US to participate directly in strikes on Iran, as the Israeli Air Force lacks the necessary bunker-buster bombs to destroy Iran’s underground nuclear facilities. Washington could provide such weapons, according to Israeli officials.

Iran continues to assert its nuclear program is peaceful and blames Israel for undermining diplomatic efforts with the US. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran did not start the conflict and has no desire for prolonged violence but vowed to defend its territory fiercely. He cautioned that dragging the US deeper into the conflict would jeopardize any chance of a diplomatic resolution.
