Crown Court takes legal actions against British gay couple due to rape, murder of baby they wanted to adopt
Both were initially arrested and later released on bail, but Lancashire Police subsequently re-arrested Varley and pressed numerous charges against him, including murder, sexually assaulting a young child, possession and distribution of sexually explicit images, and child cruelty offenses.
McGowan-Fazakerley is also alleged to be complicit in causing or allowing the child’s death and abuse. All charges relate directly to the abuse and killing of 13-month-old Preston Davey.
The trial is set to start on April 14, 2026. The two suspects were kept in custody and will remain there until their next court appearance in October.
The Cidari Multi Academy Trust, which employed Varley at the time, suspended him immediately in 2023. The trust stated Varley has been prohibited from entering the school or contacting colleagues and children and that while suspended, it was legally required to continue paying his salary. The Blackpool Gazette reports that the trust is currently “considering its position” in relation to Varley's employment.
