Indian FM declares students in Iran to be repositioned

(MENAFN) India is making plans to transfer its students stranded in Iran to safer locations within the country and is exploring other viable options to keep them out of harm’s way, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday. According to NDTV, more than 1,500 Indian students — predominantly from Jammu and Kashmir — are currently stranded in Iran.

Relatives of the stranded students have appealed directly to Prime Minister Modi and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar for help in securing their return. The situation escalated after Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion” against Iran last Friday, prompting Iran to respond with missile attacks. The two countries have exchanged several attacks since then.

Most of the stranded students are pursuing medical education in cities like Tehran, Shiraz, and Qom. The Indian Embassy in Tehran is closely monitoring the developing situation and is in constant communication with the students. The mission has shared a Google Docs form and a Telegram group link on its X account to help stranded nationals stay connected and receive updates.

All flights to and from Iran have been suspended due to the conflict, and the country's airspace is currently closed to commercial flights. The Week magazine reported that at least 5 Indian students were injured in Israeli airstrikes. “About 300 of us were moved to a safer place, which we can't disclose for security reasons,” a student told The Week.

New Delhi has asked Iran to facilitate the safe evacuation of its stranded nationals. Iran stated on Monday that while its airspace is closed, land borders remain open and viable for evacuation. Furthermore, India's strong ties with Armenia — Iran’s neighbor — may allow stranded students to be routed there safely.
