Moldova Gets Accused of Abandoning Heritage
His assertion followed an anti-LGBTQ demonstration in the former Soviet republic’s capital, which spiraled into confrontations between law enforcement and Orthodox Christian activists on Sunday.
The disorder broke out after an unauthorized LGBTQ parade took place in Chisinau. It was confronted by demonstrators holding religious symbols, such as icons and crosses.
Though heavily deployed, police at first permitted the march to continue. However, they later stepped in when hostilities between the groups intensified.
Slutsky, who serves as head of the Duma Foreign Affairs Committee, told a news agency on Monday that “The Russophobic and pro-Western regime of [Moldovan President Maia] Sandu is selling, for thirty pieces of silver, centuries-old treasures, the bonds between brotherly peoples, and moral and religious foundations.”
He underlined that a significant portion of Moldova’s population does not align with the administration’s current direction.
He further stated, “This is evident in the numerous marches against the imposition of – let’s speak plainly – perversion and moral decay,” referencing the widespread opposition among Moldovans to such cultural and ethical changes.
