South Korea’s Inaugural PM Pledges Unwavering Leadership
At a Tuesday press briefing in Seoul with foreign reporters, Kim emphasized his intention to ramp up his responsibilities as prime minister temporarily, recognizing that President Lee will need to concentrate his focus on diplomacy and trade during this critical period.
According to South Korea’s constitution, the prime minister is mandated to take orders from the president and oversee cabinet affairs.
Kim reaffirmed his commitment to these constitutional duties, stating he will serve as the cabinet’s chief of general staff, operating under the president’s guidance on state matters.
A four-term lawmaker from the ruling liberal Democratic Party and a close confidant of President Lee, Kim was among the earliest key figures nominated by the new administration immediately following Lee’s inauguration.
Kim highlighted that the Lee government intends to prioritize economic and trade diplomacy to successfully steer through the current geopolitical turmoil while working toward regional strategic stability.
Touching on South Korea-China relations, Kim remarked that im noted that opportunities exist across all sectors for the relationship to grow, adding that he would consider it a personal honor to help advance the relationship between the two countries.
