US General describes Pakistan as ‘phenomenal partner’ in counterterrorism

(MENAFN) General Michael Kurilla, head of US Central Command (CENTCOM), described Pakistan as a “phenomenal partner” in counterterrorism during a testimony to the US House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday.

Kurilla explained that with limited US intelligence, Pakistan’s army captured at least five ISIS-Khorasan members. “Since the start of 2024, Pakistan has faced over 1,000 terrorist attacks in its western region, killing nearly 700 security personnel and civilians and injuring 2,500. They are currently in the thick of a counter-terrorism fight and have been a remarkable ally in this effort.”

In March 2025, Pakistan played a key role in arresting Mohammed Sharifullah, suspected of conspiracy in the 2021 Kabul airport attack. After the arrest, Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, called Kurilla directly to pass this information on to US President Donald Trump.

Pakistan was a close US ally during the Cold War, but in a Sky News interview in April, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said the country was previously involved in “training and indoctrinating jihadists” at the West’s behest — a policy Pakistan now considers a mistake, adding that the nation bears the consequences of those decisions today.

Designated a major non-NATO ally by the USA, Pakistan has a substantial cache of US military equipment, including F-16s. However, in the last ten years, it has increasingly turned toward Beijing for arms. Kurilla advocated strengthening US ties with both Pakistan and India, noting their growing significance in regional stability — a view that comes after a rise in tensions between the two South Asian neighbors last month.
