Trump skips scheduled meeting with Zelensky

(MENAFN)
US President Donald Trump cut short his visit to the G7 summit in Canada, skipping a scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, according to White House officials.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Monday that Trump departed the summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, ahead of schedule “to attend to many important matters.” In a social media post, she noted the president “had a great day at the G7,” but confirmed he would return to Washington “after dinner with Heads of State” because of developments in the Middle East.

Trump had been slated to meet Zelensky on the sidelines of the summit—a meeting many observers believed would focus on increasing US sanctions against Russia and boosting military support for Ukraine. However, Trump has reportedly been hesitant to escalate measures against Moscow and is said to be growing disillusioned with the ongoing conflict, even contemplating stepping back from the peace negotiations.

French President Emmanuel Macron suggested Trump’s abrupt departure may be tied to US efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. “There is indeed an offer to meet and exchange,” Macron stated, adding that U.S. influence on Israel could shift the dynamics of the talks.

Trump later criticized Macron’s remarks, calling them misleading. “He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that,” Trump posted on Truth Social, dismissing Macron as “publicity seeking.”
