South Korea’s President Forges Strategic Relations with Indonesia, Malaysia

(MENAFN) On Monday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung engaged in separate phone conversations with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to explore opportunities for deepening bilateral relations, local media reported.

These discussions marked Lee’s initial direct communication with the leaders of these Southeast Asian nations since his recent inauguration earlier this month.

According to Kang Yu-jung, spokesperson for South Korea’s presidential office, Lee and Anwar expressed mutual aspirations to elevate their countries’ strategic partnership.

The two leaders committed to enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, infrastructure, digital innovation, green growth, and defense. This collaboration gains added momentum with the anticipated finalization of the South Korea-Malaysia free trade agreement slated for later this year, the spokesperson noted.

This year also commemorates 65 years of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Malaysia.

Further underlining their growing ties, South Korea and Malaysia are set to host significant regional events later in 2025: the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and meetings linked to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), respectively.

President Lee subsequently spoke with Indonesia’s President Prabowo, focusing on strengthening relations with Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

Lee stated on X that Indonesia “is one of (South) Korea’s key partners.” He added that “the Special Strategic Partnership between our two countries has developed on the foundation of mutual trust and friendship.”

He added, “Amid a rapidly changing global environment, President Prabowo and I shared our common vision to further strengthen our bilateral cooperation as longstanding friends and strategic partners.”

Lee’s popularity among the South Korean public has surged to nearly 60% during his second week in office, reflecting growing support for his leadership.
