North Africa’s heatwave causes hospitalization of dozens
Heat warnings are in place across a vast region stretching from the US Midwest to the East Coast, as well as parts of Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia in Canada, affecting more than 160 million people.
In North Carolina, at least 41 people, including children, were hospitalized with heat-related injuries. Authorities in New Jersey described the illnesses at graduation events as a “mass casualty” incident, leading to cancellations of some ceremonies and the opening of cooling centers.
Experts warn that the combination of high temperatures, elevated humidity, and prolonged heat—often with nighttime lows remaining above 80°F (27°C)—raises the risk of heat-related health problems.
The heatwave arrived less than a week after the official start of summer, with forecasters predicting record highs in several locations. The Mid-Atlantic region is expected to experience the most intense heat by Thursday, followed by the eastern Ohio Valley into Friday, posing heightened health risks due to several consecutive days of oppressive conditions.
