Trump Leaks NATO Chief’s Praising Texts
(MENAFN) United States Leader Donald Trump has made public a series of private text messages from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, where the former Dutch leader imitates Trump’s tone and offers effusive commendation for what he calls “decisive action in Iran.”
Trump shared the screenshots on his Truth Social platform just before the beginning of NATO’s two-day summit in The Hague on Tuesday.
The leaked messages are being interpreted by many as a source of significant embarrassment for the NATO leader.
In the texts, Rutte writes, “Congratulations and thank you for your decisive action in Iran, that was truly extraordinary, and something no one else dared to do. It makes us all safer.”
His words reflect strong support for Trump’s bold approach and unusual foreign policy decisions.
Rutte is also advocating Trump’s contentious push for NATO countries to increase their defense budgets to 5 percent of their gross domestic product, more than double the current standard.
In previous remarks, Rutte has even proposed reducing European social expenditures to allocate more funds to military sectors and controversially hinted that without these changes, Western Europeans may need to “learn Russian.”
In further texts, Rutte told Trump, “Europe is going to pay BIG,” and expressed confidence in “another big success” at the summit.
He emphasized that all NATO states had agreed to the new 5 percent defense expenditure goal.
He concluded by declaring, “You will achieve something NO American president in decades could get done,” implying Trump’s influence had delivered a historic diplomatic victory within the alliance.
