Hope Rises After Congo, Rwanda Peace Agreement

(MENAFN) Experts have voiced optimism that the recent peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, designed to conclude the prolonged conflict in eastern Congo, will help mitigate the severe humanitarian emergency in the area.

According to data released by the United Nations late last year, over 6.7 million individuals are displaced within Congo itself.

A significant number of Congolese citizens have fled to neighboring countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Burundi in search of safety.

This mass displacement, combined with a decline in donor support, has forced the UN World Food Program (WFP) to cut back or entirely eliminate food aid in some nations.

“Hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people and refugees who have fled the conflict in Congo will certainly return home. People have been suffering as a result of this conflict, especially women and children,” Harold Acemah, a political analyst and retired Ugandan diplomat, told a news agency.

Violent confrontations in eastern Congo between M23 insurgents and government troops have caused the displacement of at least 500,000 people and claimed over 3,000 lives as of February, according to the Africa Center for Strategic Studies.

This conflict has severely hindered the distribution of food, medicine, and humanitarian supplies.

Numerous regions remain unreachable due to ongoing insecurity, leaving displaced populations without essential resources.

Acemah described the peace deal, signed last Friday in Washington, as a constructive breakthrough that deserves the full support of all African Union members.

“They should play a role for it to be implemented,” he emphasized.
