Chelsea Advances to FIFA Club World Cup Quarterfinals
(MENAFN) On Sunday, Chelsea progressed to the quarterfinal stage of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup by defeating Benfica 4-1 after extra time.
The encounter took place at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Chelsea took the lead with a goal by Reece James in the 64th minute, after a goalless first half.
The match was temporarily halted in the 85th minute due to a lightning storm, resuming two hours later.
Benfica managed to level the score at 1-1 thanks to a penalty goal from Angel Di Maria in the 90+5th minute, pushing the game into extra time.
Early in extra time, Gianluca Prestianni of Benfica received a red card in the second minute, reducing the Portuguese side to ten players.
Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, Chelsea intensified their offense, scoring three additional goals through Christopher Nkunku (108th minute), Pedro Neto (114th minute), and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (117th minute), sealing a 4-1 win.
Chelsea will next face Brazilian club Palmeiras in the quarterfinal round.
