Trump Urges GOP Lawmakers to Back Megabill

(MENAFN) In the early hours of Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump intensified pressure on hesitant House Republicans to support his divisive tax and expenditure legislation.

Taking to social media, Trump contrasted the outcomes of the bill with dire predictions for its rejection, writing, "Largest Tax Cuts in History and a Booming Economy vs. Biggest Tax Increase in History, and a Failed Economy. What are the Republicans waiting for??? What are you trying to prove???"

He further warned, "MAGA IS NOT HAPPY, AND IT’S COSTING YOU VOTES!!!"

These comments were made as the House of Representatives began considering the Senate-approved proposal, with Republican leaders aiming to place it on the president's desk for final approval by Friday.

House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized his determination to secure the bill's progression, promising to keep the procedural vote open for an extended period if necessary.

Referring to Trump’s legislative push, which the president has dubbed “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” Johnson assured in an interview with a news agency, “I’ll keep it open as long as it takes to make sure we’ve got everybody here and accounted for and all the questions answered.”

At present, the vote tally stands at 207-217 against the measure, including five Republican dissenters and eight others who have yet to declare their position.

Earlier in the week, the Senate narrowly approved the Republican-backed bill by a 51-50 margin, with Vice President JD Vance casting the deciding vote to break the tie.

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries confirmed that Democrats remain firmly opposed to the proposal, declaring on Wednesday that they would vote "hell no" on a plan that enshrines many of Trump’s contentious domestic policies and adds an estimated USD3.4 trillion to the federal debt.
