Big evacuation in Crete as wildfire spreads

(MENAFN) A significant wildfire in the eastern part of Crete has led to the evacuation of more than 1,500 locals and visitors, as firefighting teams struggle to control the blaze, according to local reports on Thursday.

The fire started early Wednesday in the Lasithi region near the city of Ierapetra and continues to burn across three separate fronts. Strong winds are hindering containment efforts, complicating the response, public broadcaster said.

Ioannis Androulakis, deputy governor of Lasithi, described the situation as critical in an interview with the broadcaster. “We don’t know how many houses in the area have been burned so far,” he stated, noting that the fire has also caused power outages and disrupted mobile communications.
