Doctors in England to start strike over pay declination
The British Medical Association (BMA) confirmed on Wednesday that a six-week ballot, which ended on July 7, saw 90% of participating junior doctors supporting further strikes. The turnout for the vote was 55%, with nearly 30,000 doctors casting ballots and 26,766 backing the strike.
This vote grants junior doctors a renewed mandate to take industrial action through January 2026.
Melissa Ryan and Ross Nieuwoudt, co-chairs of the BMA’s junior doctors committee, said the result sends a strong message to the government: “Doctors have spoken and spoken clearly: they won’t accept that they are worth a fifth less than they were in 2008. Our pay may have declined, but our will to fight remains strong.”
They called on Health Secretary Wes Streeting to return to negotiations and present a credible pay proposal.
