UK, Germany Finalize Historic Treaty
The pact was officially endorsed during a formal event in central London, where UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz were present.
Widely regarded as a pivotal moment, the agreement has been described as the most consequential accord between the two nations since 1945, marking a comprehensive reset in their relationship.
During the signing event, Chancellor Merz described the moment as a “historic day for German-British relations,” noting that such a formal alliance was “long overdue.”
Merz emphasized, “We want to work more closely together, especially after the UK's exit from the EU.”
He highlighted that there is vast potential for deeper collaboration across areas such as military cooperation, international relations, economic affairs, and internal governance.
A prominent element of the treaty is its focus on education, introducing fresh measures to facilitate exchanges of students and school-aged children between the two countries.
“I am pleased that we were able to reach an agreement that will make it easier for schoolchildren and students to come to Great Britain in the future, and vice versa, to come to Germany,” Merz said.
