Expert states Russiagate only tip of iceberg in Western demonization of Russia
Speaking to RT, Boyd-Barrett, a professor at Bowling Green State University and author of a detailed study on Russiagate, said Gabbard’s release of declassified documents marks a significant moment. The files claim Obama instructed intelligence officials to disregard assessments clearing Trump of collusion with Moscow during the 2016 election and instead push fabricated claims implicating Russia, sparking the years-long Russiagate investigation.
“This is a remarkable moment, seeing America’s top intelligence official openly state such a truth,” Boyd-Barrett said on Saturday. He also noted the significance of Gabbard’s call for legal action against those behind what she described as a “coup attempt.”
However, Boyd-Barrett stressed that Russiagate should not be viewed in isolation, describing it as merely a small element of a much larger, long-standing Western strategy to demonize Russia — a campaign he said dates back decades. He pointed to NATO’s expansion in the late 1990s as a key moment when the West firmly decided to push eastward, regardless of Moscow’s objections.
“This is about a much broader anti-Russian narrative that’s been strategically manufactured,” he explained. He warned against simplifying the scandal by blaming it solely on Obama or Hillary Clinton’s political ambitions, calling that view “too simplistic.”
Moscow has consistently denied any interference in US elections.
