India Plans Using AI to Enhance Women’s Safety

(MENAFN) In a recent statement to the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Home Affairs revealed its plan to implement cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence-powered facial recognition, intelligent lighting, and drone surveillance to closely observe vulnerable areas and reduce crimes against women.

This proposal was made in response to a public interest petition brought forward by the Supreme Court Women Lawyers' Association concerning the increasing incidents of violence against women, according to a report by a news outlet.

According to the ministry, several railway stations across major urban hubs, including Delhi and Mumbai, will soon be equipped with AI-based monitoring tools, as reported by a news agency.

In addition to AI, tools like automated number plate recognition, smart illumination systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles will be deployed to enhance security in regions identified as high-risk.

The ministry further informed the apex court that the National Data Sharing and Exchange Platform holds confidential data, which includes names, locations, photos, and fingerprint records of individuals accused of serious offenses like "rape," "stalking," and "child abuse," as per the news outlet.

At present, the digital repository consists of over 2.02 million records accessible to police departments and investigative agencies nationwide through the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System.

This technological framework is designed to link various branches of the justice system — including law enforcement, judiciary, correctional facilities, forensic centers, and prosecution units — to enable seamless data integration and improved coordination.
